Sir David Attenborough ‘almost died’ during perilous documentary filming

A close friend and frequent collaborator of Sir David Attenborough has revealed how the legendary documentarian had a very close shave while shooting one of his acclaimed TV shows.

Alastair Fothergill, who produced Planet Earth and Blue Planet, revealed how Attenborough very nearly came-a-cropper while he filmed dolphins in the Bahamas for 1990’s The Trials Of Life.

“We were filming David from the top of a boat that had a wooden platform on the back for people to dive off,” Fothergill told the Radio Times.

“We had just done a wonderful piece and David was about to go under the water again and a great wave washed him under the dive platform, which then came smashing down.

“I’ve never forgotten it because David was unconscious and there was blood everywhere and I remember thinking, ‘The one thing you don’t want on your CV is you’re the man who killed David Attenborough’.”

Thankfully, Sir David recovered fully from the incident – and went on to provide us with some of the most iconic TV moments of the last 25 years.

Earlier this year, Sir David also hit out at Bear Grylls for killing animals on screen in his new TV show.

He criticised his fellow documentarian for his new show ‘The Island With Bear Grylls’, in which he and contestants slaughter animals including pigs, turkeys and crocodiles.

“We’ve never killed an animal,” sir David told The Sun. “Bear Grylls will have to answer for himself.

“But I wouldn’t willingly kill an animal just to get a shot.”
